Greenbriar Children's Center was established July 14, 1949 as an orphanage for African-American children in Savannah and surrounding areas. Prior to this time, black children who were homeless or without parental support were placed in local work farms and penal institutions. In the 1960's, Greenbriar opened its doors to children of all races and diversified its services to meet changing needs.
Greenbriar is a private, non-profit agency whose mission is to provide services which promote healthy development of children and the strengthening of families. We are accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children, and currently operate seven programs.
Our major funding sources are the United Way of the Coastal Empire, Chatham County, City of Savannah, state and federal grants and private contributions.
In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.
